If you spend any time on social media, you have probably seen the posts;
the requests for cards for senior citizens and their loved ones. The posts all
take the same form, asking well wishers to flood nursing homes and private
residences with greeting cards.
These card parties bring enormous joy to the lives of seniors, shut-ins and
others with limited mobility. And while they are still going on, there is a new trend happening all over the country in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
The global pandemic and the resulting lockdown has disrupted the lives of
many, but seniors are bearing the brunt of the fear and the danger. In
nursing homes and personal care homes, in hospitals and private residences, seniors are feeling isolated like never before, but yard sign parties are brightening their days and bringing new hope to their worlds.
These yard sign parties take many different forms. Sometimes it is a simple
matter of placing a yard sign outside the window of a parent or grandparent in a nursing home. These acts of caring are being enacted around the country, with children and grandchildren showing their loved ones how much they care.
In other cases the yard sign parties are more organized affairs, with the staff at personal care homes, the nurses at hospitals and whole neighborhoods getting together. Neighbors are placing yard signs on their lawns, telling their elderly neighbors that they are not forgotten. They are picking up their older residents and driving them around so they can see the yard signs for themselves.
In other cases entire lawns at hospitals and nursing homes are sprouting
colorful yard signs, so residents can look out their windows and see the well
wishes firsthand. But no matter what form they take, these pandemic-inspired celebrations are a new twist on the traditional flood of greeting cards. So why not join in the fun with your own yard sign? It will make you, and everyone else in your neighborhood, feel great.
